Room 4 - How has the world changed - Transport

Bikes
The first bike was made out of wood but today they are made of metal.
They sat on the bike and pushed along with the feet while todays bikes have pedals.

Housework
It took all day to do the washing. First Great Grandma had to light a fire under the copper to get hot water. Then she had to push the clothes up and down with a long stick to get them clean. Next she put them through a mangle to get soapy water out before rinsing them in cold water. Then she had to put them through the mangle again before whe could hang the washing out.
Today we have a washing machine and push the start button.

Room 9 & 12 have been learningabout bridges throughout time

Early bridges were beam and arch bridges and modern ones are suspension and cable stayed. Materials used for early bridges were stone and wood and now they are concrete and steel.

The uses and loads of bridges have changed as well.

Room 3 looked at the changing seasons and how this made life in the olden days hard.

At school we noticed and thought about:

It's getting colder because it is heading into winter.

Butterflies die in the winter.

It is frosty in the winter.

At Ferrymead we learnt:

100 years ago baths were different from us now.

Toilets had a hole and no flush.

Clothes went througha mangle to get the water out. Then they were pegged out to dry.

Tables were scrubbed down.

Irons wer heated on the stove because there was no electricity.

Room 11 found out about the changes to food packaging

We think there is too much plastic in modern packaging. We think that too much plastic ends up in landfill and that it is a waste of oil (plastic is made from oil just like petrol).

If we made less plastic then the petrol might last longer.

We like the way that glass is still being used even if the jar lids have changed from cotton to screwtops.
